In 2017, lessons at my home will be held in Orchid Avenue, Mornington South. In 2018, all lessons will be held at my studio in Bass Street, McCrae. Please note that for all lessons held in your own home, a fee of $25 is charged for travel time up to 20 mins from Mornington.

How long do lessons last?
Lessons are 50 minutes long. That is an optimal amount of focus time for most students.

What will happen in the first lesson?
In the first lesson, I will begin by asking your child lots of questions. We will discuss their strengths and what they find challenging. I will ask specifically how they remember and/or recognise written and spoken sounds and words, how they feel about certain types of reading or writing, listening and speaking. I will be interested to know as much as possible, not only to ascertain your individual child's needs, but also how I can best support them. They will then read and spell for me and listen to me reading so they can tell me what they understand from the spoken word. Before the end of the lesson, your child and I will discuss how we will proceed in future lessons. Lessons will involve testing, skill development and discussion. My aim will be to help your child choose and use strategies that work for them. I will then pass on a short report to parents by email.

Do I need to be at the lessons with my child?
I don't expect parents to come to lessons. This is because it is important to establish a trusting working relationship between student and teacher for personal growth to flourish. Learning literacy skills is a very personal activity and involves confidence-building as well as skills acquisition. I therefore find that students are more focused and relaxed when working one-on-one. Of course, I am happy to discuss your child's progress at any time, either by phone or email and I will also suggest certain strategies for home from time to time. If, however, you feel strongly that you would prefer to be at the lessons, you are welcome!
